Swire Coca-Cola (SCC): Efficient Industrial Steam Generation

Challenge Overview

Swire Coca-Cola operates manufacturing and bottling plants across Greater China, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. It aims to reduce energy use and carbon emissions from generation of steam for sanitization purposes, relative to a natural gas boiler.

Solutions could include but are not limited to:

  • Industrial heat pumps for steam generation and water heating
  • Hot water storage with heat recycling
  • Heat recycling and thermal energy storage using other media, such as refractory bricks, carbon, volcanic bricks, molten salts, or waxes
Main Requirements

The solution must be scalable to a large beverage manufacturing plant which consumes 12,500 MT of steam annually. Waste heat recovery is needed from multiple water sources at temperatures from 35-80⁰C. Thermal energy storage systems should enable 50% or higher heat recovery and reuse. Heat pumps should offer COP of 2.5 or higher.

What we are not interested in

  • More efficient natural gas boilers. Other hydrocarbon, biomass, or hydrogen-fueled steam generation. On site renewable energy generation.
