HAECO Hong Kong: Increase Recycling Value of Wooden Boxes

Funded Pilot Opportunity: HAECO Hong Kong seeks to recycle wood waste from boxes used for shipments.

Challenge Overview

HAECO Hong Kong seeks to recycle wood waste from boxes used to ship aircraft parts and components. Currently, these boxes are non-recycled and are disposed of at landfills. In 2022, non-recycled wooden boxes represented 135 tons of wood. The boxes are composed of a mix of material composed of wood, plastic foam protectors, and metal hinges. HAECO Hong Kong has no current capacity for sorting materials and, therefore, cannot recycle the wood.

Solutions could include but are not limited to:

  • Wood Pre-treatment
  • Turning Wood Waste into Useful Products/Energy

Main Requirements

The solutions sought need to:

  • Require little or no manpower
  • Separate various materials and cut wood in pieces of less than 2m in length if not turned on-site into energy
  • Be suitable for being implemented on-site
